Outsourcing. It’s something every business owner has to consider if they want to grow their business further. As an entrepreneur you’ll appreciate, there’s only so much you can do yourself, plus you cannot be good at everything. If you want your business to flourish, you’re going to need to start outsourcing. But if you like to feel in control, that can be a real issue for you when you’re outsourcing.

Outsourcing enables you to free up your time so you can concentrate on those tasks that only you can do. It also gives you access to extra skills you may not otherwise be able to bring into your business. And of course, it enables you to get a lot of those tasks off your plate.

But if you want to benefit from outsourcing, you’re going to need to learn how to feel in control, even when you’re not doing the work yourself. Here are a few handy tips to help you achieve that.

Have a conversation about working together

Whether you’re outsourcing to a Virtual Assistant or another outsourcer, it pays to have an initial conversation to clarify how you like to work. Many have an onboarding process that involves having this type of conversation. It enables you both to get clear on the workflow of tasks, along with any expectations you might have.

Be clear on your expectations when you’re outsourcing tasks

When you’re outsourcing tasks always include a clear brief. Give the other person an understanding of what is needed to adequately fulfil the task. Share your expectations regarding timescale and standards, as well as the essentials that need to be met, to reach your standard of completion. Let them know what you expect in terms of updates on their progress, and if there’s anything specific they need to know or include, to help them achieve your expectations.

Have regular check-ins with your Virtual Assistant

It’s essential you have regular check-ins with your Virtual Assistant or outsourcer. These are usually agreed together, so you both know what’s expected. Regular check-ins help you address problems and issues before they can have a negative impact on anything, as well as giving you both a chance to build on the working relationship you have. These check-ins don’t have to be for very long – sometimes a quick email or a 10-minute weekly call will suffice, but they do need to happen if you want to feel in control when you’re outsourcing.

Outsourcing is something all entrepreneurs are going to need to consider if they want to grow and upscale their businesses. But it doesn’t have to make you feel like you’re losing control.
