I cannot believe that my business has been running for 5 months already, the time has flown by & I can honestly say I love it, there have been trials & tribulations as there is with anything.

For this blog I thought I would share my top 10 lessons learnt so far.

  1. It’s ok to be scared, it has been a big leap from having a dependable income within the corporate world to now having one that is solely my responsibility.
There have been times when I’ve doubted myself & I have worried for days, I had to learn how to pick myself up.  I now celebrate all of my achievements, it might sound fickle, but when you start a business from scratch its hard work & achievements should be celebrated.
  2. I am surprised at how much work I can get through with none of the normal office distractions, nobody asking me about my weekend or telling what they’ve been up to.  I do sometimes miss the comradeship of working with others, but I communicate with so many people now in many different ways which is great.
  3. Having only yourself in the tea round saves time, although running out of coffee is not good, neither is getting so engrossed in your work that you forget to have lunch.
  4. I get frustrated at having to deal with the misconception people have about working for yourself or from home… Oh you don’t really have a proper job can you just…..you sit at home all day…why can’t you…
Working from home & for yourself means that you need to be extremely focused, driven & organised. For that reason I live on lists for both work & personal tasks (aswell as coffee). People don’t really understand what I do – mental note for the future to improve on this.
  5. I work harder, longer & at the weekend too, not only do I have client work to complete but I also have to work on my business & because I enjoy it I don’t mind at all.  I just try to make as much use of my time as I can.
  6. I love learning about new things & my clients businesses, it is amazing how much I have learnt along with new skills.
  7. I started to use twitter & think it is great for the relationships it allows you to build & I have had some great enquiries & clients from it.
  8. Time Savers – Using a time tracker helps me to plan my week as I know roughly how long things take now, I also know not to check my email when it pings as this was a massive time eater, so now I schedule in the time for checking my emails.
  9. I have met some amazing people through my business via networking events, training, twitter & my client base who have helped & supported me (along with my partner) on my business journey for which I am very grateful.
  10. Finally & by far the biggest one for me … I love what I do, it’s gives me the flexibility to spend quality time with my son (who is great at shredding paperwork).  I love the fact that I make a difference in my client’s lives whilst helping them to achieve their goals.

For these reasons I am full of motivation & drive to continually learn, improve & help others.  I am really looking forward to the next 6 months, the challenges, the achievements & the lessons to be learned.
